Sclerotherapy
WHAT IS SCLEROTHERAPY?
Sclerotherapy is a method for eliminating superficial telangiectasias (spider veins) and some varicosities by the injection of a solution, called a “sclerosing agent” into the veins. The vast majority of patients who have sclerotherapy will have significant clearing of the veins with at least good improvement. There is no guarantee, however, that it is effective in every case.
WHAT IS IT USED FOR?
It is used to treat spider veins in the legs.
WHAT ARE THE COMMON SIDE EFFECTS?
The most common side effects include injection-site redness, swelling, pain/tenderness, firmness, and bruising. The doctor will have you wear support hose for a specified number of days after treatment. Support hose minimizes the side effects of the injections and aids in preventing the accumulation of blood in the larger veins.
HOW SOON WILL I SEE RESULTS?
Immediately
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I HAVE SCLEROTHERAPY?
Appointments should be scheduled as often as the patient and the doctor see fit. People who spend a lot of time on their feet may need to come in more frequently.
WHO SHOULD NOT TRY SCLEROTHERAPY?
Anyone with significant circulatory problems, uncontrolled diabetes or pregnant women should not undergo this procedure.
